MARTA KUBIŠOVÁ, THE VOICE AGAINST THE TANKS

A cold November in 1968, snow and despair, and a song. Singing it, to vindicate democracy, is a charming and proud twenty-something, wearing boots and hair as they are worn in London, and eyes made up in the heavy black of revolt. In the cultural ferment that moves Bohemian society, she is the image of the new emancipated woman, like Jane Fonda in Barbarella[1] or Monica Vitti in Modesty Blaise[2]. It is the hope for a cultural and political thaw against communist frigidity, the quivering vindication of the Prague Spring, suffocated in August by Soviet tanks. A spring in which the country’s political leader, Alexander Dubček[3] , Secretary of the Communist Party, had launched courageous reforms to remove Czechoslovakia from the yoke of the USSR.

In Moscow, his reforms were seen as a threat. His programme, while maintaining the collectivist economic system, allowed the emergence of other political parties, freedom of the press and expression, abolished censorship and political police. On the night of 20-21 August 1968[4], the panzers entered the cities, surrounded by citizens who did not accept the occupation – as is happening today in Ukraine, but with the difference that, at that time, the Czechoslovakians had no army of their own to defend them and the Yalta agreements on the partition of the world into two were still freshly signed.

Marta Kubišová, a young star of national TV, is asked to sing ‘Cesta’, the song with which she won the Bratislava Golden Lyre – a tribute to the Russian liberation soldiers in 1945[5]. She refuses to lend her voice to a song that is politically outrageous to her people: ‘It all starts with my support for the Prague Spring,’ says Kubišová. “Instead of Cesta I sang Prayer for Marta, and my troubles began.”  The song is part of a musical dedicated to Rudolf III, the German king who was poisoned because he refused to suppress the Prague uprising, led by Jan Želivský, which on 30 July 1419 led to the expulsion of the Christian soldiery from Bohemia[6]: ‘Let there be peace in this land,’ the refrain goes, ‘let wickedness, hatred and rancour, fear and strife disappear when, O people, the lost government of your destiny returns to your hands. A song that became the anthem of civil resistance to Soviet normalisation[7].

Peace shall henceforth remain with this land. Wrath, envy, rancour, fear and discord – they fade away, now that your lost power over your affairs will return to you, people, will return to you. From heaven the cloud is leaving and each one reaps his own sowing. My prayer speaks to the hearts that the time of wrath did not burn as the frost burns the flowers. May peace remain from now on with this land. Wrath, envy, rancour, fear and discord – they fade away now that your lost power over your affairs will return to you, people, will return to you[8]

Her life

Prague, 22 August 1968: Soviet tanks surrounded by crowds[9]

Marta Kubišová was born on 1 November 1942 in České Budějovice, the capital of South Bohemia[10], where she recently turned 80. Her father is a doctor and her mother a housewife. Her father attaches great importance to her education and convinces her to follow in his footsteps in the study of medicine. He also encourages her to study the piano, but with little success. Kubišová admits that she has never felt any love for this instrument: lessons with a private tutor are, in her opinion, a waste of money[11].

As a child, Marta was much more interested in horses[12].  In 1959, because of her ‘bourgeois’ origins, the communist party banned her from university studies: ‘They wrote to me that the working class did not trust me’, and she found work in a glassworks[13]. As she grew up, she became passionate about music and debuted as a singer in provincial orchestras. In 1961, dissatisfied, she left the glassworks, on the very day her mother read an advertisement for the Stop Theatre in Pardubice, where Marta went to audition as a singer and actress – and won it[14].

She entered a national competition and made it to the finals for ‘new talent’ in Prague. After spending three years singing jazz pieces in provincial theatres, she met the composer Bohuslav Ondráček[15] in the Afa Theatre in Plzeň at the end of 1964[16], who decisively influenced her career[17].  The originality of Ondráček’s musical compositions attracted the attention of directors in Prague and in 1965 they both began working at the Rokoko Theatre. Marta quickly became famous[18]: the sex symbol of the Czechoslovak variety show of the 1960s[19]. Her contralto voice is deep and very distinctive[20]. She becomes easily recognisable among the other singers and thus increasingly famous[21]. She met Helena Vondráčková and Václav Neckář, with whom she founded the group Golden Kids[22]. The first studio recording was made on 25 September 1963 with the song Mne se libi (‘I like it’) at the Pardubice studios in Prague – an overwhelming success, which attracted the malevolent attention of the Soviet powers.

Without you, I have only one long moment, full of many strange dreams, in them the old church prays with my desire, and I beg you: make the bells ring. I would like to know a very long song, to sing in it the loneliness of my days, you taught me only half of it, and I beg you to make the bells ring. Only the bells know what you took from me, only the bells know what will happen next.

One day a composer will come and a poet will live a hundred strange dreams, my song will grow like a fragile stalactite, and I beg you: let the bells ring. Only the bells know what you took from me, only the bells know what will happen next. One day there will come a composer and a poet who can live a hundred strange dreams, my song will grow like a fragile stalactite and I beg you: make the bells ring[23]

The censorship

Marta Kubišová, Václav Neckář and Helena Vondráčková: the Golden Kids[24]

The song Modlitba pro Martu (‘Prayer for Martha’), contained in his first album, ‘Songy a baladi’[25]. became the symbol of the Prague Spring[26]. The new pro-Soviet government punished her: starting in February 1970, she was gradually removed from the stage and, as they could not hit her politically, the authorities tried to discredit her publicly. The Golden Kids trio disbanded, the results of the Zlatý slavík (a hit parade) were rigged so that her name would not appear in the top seven[27]. Marta’s records and films are confiscated and banned[28].

Marta can no longer sing publicly in a ‘land where fear prevails and where the innocent is considered an enemy’[29]. The political police order her to sign a document for her support of the regime in exchange for permission to perform again. She refuses[30]. Therefore, in 1969, the Golden Nightingale award is not presented to her in public, and from then on the StB, a parallel agency to the GDR’s STASI[31], has fake pornographic photos published in the newspapers[32]. The StB stalks her, like many other compatriots, even those who have moved abroad, as in the case of Ivana Marie Zelnícková, the first wife of Donald Trump[33]. Marta is forced to work in a toy factory, then in a building construction company, as a secretary[34].

Of the Golden Kids, the only one to continue his career is Václav Neckář – paying a very high price, namely that of becoming an informer for the StB and compiling infamous dossiers on Marta and on the entire generation of Czechoslovak rebel artists born in the years of the Prague Spring – a disgrace that, years later, even touched Marta, because the pro-communist press accused her in vain of having also had a secret agreement with the Czechoslovak Communist Party[35]. An accusation so absurd that it was never taken into consideration by the population. For them, Marta Kubišová is one of the courageous signatories and even the spokesperson for Charter 77, the anti-Soviet manifesto of the Slavic intellectuals that formed the basis of the uprisings that, during the Perestroika years, led to the birth of democratic governments in Eastern European countries[36].

Problems with husbands

Václav Havel with his wife Olga at the wedding of Marta Kubišová and Jan Němec[37]

Yet, the worst suffering in Marta’s life is not the Soviet vetoes, but her love life. She is very unlucky with men, and her husbands have been torture for her. The first, director Jan Němec[38], suffers from mental problems: ‘We dated for a year and were together for three years. But it is difficult to live with a genius,’ she later recounted. Well, the German director may be a genius, but he proves to be a delinquent above all. Already in March 1969, when they are engaged, he shoots her, drunk, on the pier, and recounts a bloody and passionate delirium, which ends in nothing: Marta does not denounce him, on the contrary, she marries him.

But he drinks like a fish and, drunk again, throws an axe at his wife[39]. No wonder Marta loses a baby in the eighth month of pregnancy[40]. Nevertheless, she divorced the German only a year later, in 1972, when she discovered his infidelity. In 1974 came her second marriage to Jan Moravec[41]. In 1981, when she learns from State Security that her husband has a daughter out of wedlock, the two divorce[42]. As the singer writes in her memoirs, Moravec always had lovers. “He tells me: if somewhere in the flat you come across a bra that is not yours, stay calm, that’s what I was trying to find”[43].

Until 1974 she lived retired in the provinces, then, after the divorce from her first husband[44], who emigrated to the United States, Marta found a job with the construction company in the capital. During this period she was helped financially by friends and her brother[45]. She became closer to the dissenting community thanks to the family of Václav Havel[46] , cousin of her ex-husband Jan Němec[47]. She signed Charter 77, which caused her continuous pressure from the authorities, culminating in her arrest[48].

Young hippies oppressed by the communist regime in the Czech Republic and Slovakia[49]

That of Charta 77 is a story that begins at the height of normalisation[50]. Times when rock music, listened to secretly in the countryside or in the darkness of cellars, annoyed the regime[51], as poetically described in the wonderful German film ‘Sonnenallee’[52] : the young people of the East hungered for all things American, considered an escape route from their cultural isolation[53]. Once again, the Czechoslovakians are in the front line: in March 1976, one of the many raids against the vlasatci[54] , the hippies, takes place during a music festival a few kilometres from Prague. The police arrest 27 youths ‘for premeditated disturbance of public order’. The trial, six months later, sends several members of the most notorious band on the circuit, the Plastic People of the Universe[55], to prison with sentences of between eight and 18 months. It was the spark that, for a small group of intellectuals, lit the fire of public dissent[56].

In 1978 Marta Kubišová recorded several songs, illegally, in the kitchen of the musician Jaroslav Hutka[57] , and these appeared on an LP published in Sweden containing the songs of artists censored in Czechoslovakia[58]. In June 1979 her daughter Kateřina was born to her second husband[59]. Marta asked Václav Havel to be her godfather for the christening, but the political police got in the way: the party was interrupted by the most notorious raid on dissent activists. Havel is sentenced to 4 years in prison[60].

The glow of Sharon’s rose is in her, the warmth of the afternoon sun, the sweet vine on her lips, her skin smooth with the scent of spikenard. Her name is Magdalena, she is not a saint, she is just a woman. Hallelujah. As a well is a woman locked with the padlock of virtue, a pilgrim comes, dying of thirst, the prison of the well torments the water. Thirst quenches Magdalene, she is not a saint, she is just a woman. Hallelujah. The moon guards the grapes badly, the foxes do not watch over the vines; the men are many more, she has given them the key to the vineyard. She’s not a saint, she’s just a woman, that’s why Magdalena sins. Hallelujah. The moon chases the foxes in vain, it no longer prunes the vine. I hear the Pharisee calling: this woman sleeps in hell! Amen, I say, Amen, arise, if thou art holy, stone thyself. Hallelujah. Beauty is not a sin, a sin is usually a strict fast. Love is like a song that changes the thirst of the mouth. Hallelujah, hallelujah-a. At night the myrrh smells bitter, the grass weeps, the dew falls, the shepherd searches in vain for the sheep, the moonlight cannot be caught. The wind from the vines moans softly: Magdalene, Magdalene. Hallelujah. The stern judges punish the woman, they cut off her beautiful locks. They lead her to the plunderers through the city, they cannot forgive. They have different names for her, they simply do not hear Magdalena. Hallelujah. A stone from the Mount of Olives rains down in worldly wrath, the mouth she kissed, the robe forces to lie. The hand tender in desire now reaches for the stone. Hallelujah. In the name of love, in the name of youth, in the name of the hands that caress, in the name of the night that sleeps, in the name of the heart that wakes, amen, I say, amen, arise, if you are holy, stone. Hallelujah. Beauty is not a sin, a sin is usually a strict fast. Love is like a song that changes the thirst of the mouth. Hallelujah, hallelujah-a. Alleluia, alleluia-a. Hallelujah, hallelujah-a[61]

These are difficult years. The StB subjects her to gruelling interrogations, persecution and coercion. “I preferred to lock Kateřina in the house with a chain on the door and never let her out of my sight. In the end, the worst interrogations took place in the afternoon, when Kateřina was in kindergarten. They picked me up at three o’clock and let me go at half past five,’ she recalled in one of the interviews. But kindergarten ended at five: ‘So Kateřina and the teacher marched outside on the pavement for an hour and waited for me. I made up the excuse that the boss sent me far away and there I got lost’[62].

She does not give up. We find her again on 10 December 1988 in Škroupovo Square in Prague, singing the national anthem at the first public outing of dissent, courageously desired by the new generation of activists and tacitly authorised by the authorities[63]. And it was she again, from the balcony of the former Melantrich publishing house on Wenceslas Square, who accompanied the end of normalisation by singing at the top of her voice[64]. On 21 November 1989 alongside Havel, the future President of the Republic, in front of 200,000[65] pro-democracy demonstrators. In Ostrava, he intones Prayer for Marta before an oceanic crowd in tears. A few days later he sang it live in Prague, on the Letná plain, in front of hundreds of thousands of spectators[66]. Prayer for Martha, which had been the secret anthem of dissidence during the years of the pro-Soviet regime, now became the soundtrack of the Velvet Revolution and the return to freedom and democracy in all Slavic countries.

The liberation

The cover of the album celebrating her successes shows the ‘real’ Marta, dreamy, dark, passionate. Illuminated by the lamp, one glimpses Charta 77[68]

With the end of communism, a new life began for Marta[69]. After 1989 she became involved in politics for a few months, in the ranks of the Civic Forum, but from 1990 she returned to music, TV and the Ungelt Theatre in Prague[70]. He resumes recording music and singing in public both in the Czech Republic and abroad (Sweden, Switzerland)[71]. In the following years, he organised and participated in various charity concerts, or solidarity concerts with Chinese dissidents[72].

Currently, due to her poor health (she was hospitalised where she underwent surgery for an intestinal perforation[73]), she has retired to private life. However, she made an exception for the premiere of the film ‘Marta’, which tells the story of her life[74]. A fitting film for perhaps the country’s most important living artist: Kubišová won the Golden Nightingale for the most popular Czechoslovak singer three times and the Golden Bratislava Lyre in 1968. Among others, she performed at the Olympia in Paris, in Cannes at the MIDEM festival and starred in the film Martyrs of Love by her ex-husband Jan Němek and in the TV series Song for Rudolf III[75]. In 1995, Marta Kubišová received the State Medal of Merit from Czech President Václav Havel. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998 as part of the Academy of Popular Music Awards[76].

In the very harsh twenty years in which she was relegated to the margins of society, she was an example to all, a symbol of determination and stubbornness. Her beautiful voice became the sign of defiance against oppression and, later, she was the face of revolution. Marta Kubišová was not afraid to react, to fight back, to survive. A beautiful woman, as courageous as the thousands who rebelled against the rising Soviet tide. She carries with her the awareness of her responsibility to future generations: the homeland, democracy and freedom are privileges that are obtained by fighting not with weapons, but with ideas, intellectual honesty and beauty.

Aleluja aleluja-a. Nocí myrha hořce voní, tráva pláče, rosu roní, marně pastýř ovci hledá, luny svit se chytit nedá. Vítr z vinic tiše sténá: Magdaléna, Magdaléna. Aleluja. Přísní soudci ženu jali, krásnou kadeř ostříhali. K pranýři ji městem vedou, odpustit to nedovedou. Aleluja aleluja-a. Aleluja aleluja-a. Aleluja aleluja-a.
